Insects are the most diverse group of animals on Earth. There are over a million described species of insect, and an estimated 6-10 million species total. Insects are found in nearly every above-ground environment, even in Antarctica, which has a species of insect called springtails. There is even a species of insect that lives on the surface of the open ocean, walking on the water tension using tiny leg hairs. These are insects of the genus Halobates, otherwise known as sea skaters or water striders. Around Antarctica, where there is greater oxygen in the sea than the Equator, these can grow to 30 cm (1 ft) in width.

So far, there have been observations of 5,000 dragonfly species, 2,000 praying mantis, 20,000 grasshopper, 170,000 butterfly and moth, 120,000 fly, 82,000 true bug, 360,000 beetle, and 110,000 bee, wasp and ant species. Keep in mind that arachnids, such as mites — of which there are over 1 million described species — and crustaceans, like lobsters, are not insects, which only includes members of the class Insecta.

Species of insect range in size from 0.139 mm (0.00547 in, fairyfly) to 55.5 cm (21.9 in, stick insect), with most falling between 0.5 mm (0.02 in) and 50 mm (2 in). In general, smaller insects are capable of reproducing more rapidly due to their larger counterparts, allowing them to maintain their biomass over generations. If the biomass is not regularly replenished, then a species will go extinct. It is thought that the species of insect alive today only represent about 1% of all insects that have ever lived.

Insects are truly a success story for animals. Although most people don’t think of insects when the word “animal” is mentioned, they are both the most successful and numerous. The global insect biomass is estimated at 1012 kg, with approximately 1018 distinct individuals. Divided by the total number of species, this gives an average of 100 million individuals per species. Of course, like with other animals, the majority (over 66%) of insect species are found in the world’s rainforests.

When a hen reaches eighteen to twenty weeks of age, she begins to lay eggs. Generally, a hen will lay one egg a day. In a natural environment, the hen will continue to lay eggs in her nest until she has several there. She then sits on the eggs until they hatch.
A hen’s reproductive cycle generally lasts twenty-four hours during the summer months. Her cycle is set by day length. As the days shorten, and winter approaches, a hen will lay fewer eggs, skipping some days. Some hens stop laying eggs all together until the spring arrives. The reason behind this is that winter is a bad time to raise chicks. The cold weather decreases a chicks chance of survival.
Hens, like all other birds, deposit eggs through the same opening they use for waste removal. Because of a flap of skin that stretches down, eggs are not contaminated by any waste materials that may be near the opening. A hen does not need to be fertilized to lay an egg. Most hens in a laying facility have never even been in contact with a rooster.
After the hen lays an egg, she will leave the nest. The egg will quickly cool enough to keep an embryo viable for up to two weeks. Every day, the hen will lay another egg until she has several in her nest. She then becomes “broody.” A broody hen will sit on her nest all day and night, her wings spread slightly to help keep the eggs warm. Because the embryos’ growth was paused while the nest was being laid, they will all develop at the same time.
A broody hen will leave her eggs, briefly, once a day to defecate, eat, and drink. Anyone who gets too close to her eggs will be pecked at. After three weeks of brooding, her chicks will hatch. Any eggs that don’t hatch will be left behind as she brings the new chicks out into the world for the first time. The nest will be abandoned.
In farms or egg-laying facilities, this natural process is broken up. Lights can make the hen think that the day length hasn’t changed, resulting in a more consistent number of eggs. After an egg is laid, it is removed. The hen thinks that there is still not enough eggs in her nest, and will continue laying. A hen that is resistant to laying in a nest can be encouraged by placing a few fake eggs into her nest. Hens will continue to lay eggs until they reach two or three years of age.
esides daylight and old age, there are several other reasons why a hen may stop laying. One is due to poor nutrition. A hen that is not receiving proper amounts of feed will be unable to produce eggs. Another reason is molting. After several months of egg laying, a hen may go through a molting cycle. Due to the energy required to molt, a hen’s body will not have the energy to produce eggs. Hens may also stop laying temporarily due to stress or disease.
uring the course of their lifetime, a hen may lay as much as thirty times her body weight in eggs. At one egg a day, for almost two and a half years, that is about nine hundred eggs. For a little chicken, that is quite an accomplishment.

Lice (singular – louse) are tiny insects called mites. They are not microscopic – they can be seen with the naked eye. The proper name is pediculosis. Adult lice lay eggs on the hair shafts of the head, about 3 mm from the scalp skin. After one week, the eggs hatch and an immature, mobile louse nymph emerges. This nymph hides in the scalp and after 2 to 3 weeks it matures enough to begin laying eggs. Adult lice can only live 1 or 2 days away from a warm body, and the eggs must be close to the warm scalp in order to hatch. They feed on human blood through tiny bites in the skin. lice lay 3 to 10 eggs per day.

It depends a lot on what ~kind~ of turtle it is, you know Florida has more species of turtle than any other state in the U.S.? That’s a lot of turtles to pick from and a good deal of them can live on both land and water.
Knowing as much as you know about it right now if you decide to keep it in captivity, I’d say a year or less.
Most turtles if left to themselves can live 30 years easily… box turtles have been documented at 120 years. Please, if it’s a wild turtle, just put it back where you found it (if it was crossing the road put it on the side of the road it was trying to get to). There are various species in the state that are endangered and therefore illegal for you to so much as touch.
Your best bet if you want a pet turtle would be to look around at what’s available captive bred from your local pet stores and breeders and to purchase a book on the care and maintenance of the species before purchasing the actual animal so that you have an idea of how to take care of it and what it will need to live a happy healthy life.

There are three species of elephant; the Asian Elephant, the African bush elephant and the African forest elephant. The typical elephant can live up to 70 years, and eats 300-400 pounds of food a day. Elephants spend more time in the womb than any other animal, 22 months. When a baby elephant is born it can weigh up to 260 pounds
An elephant poops a lot, it depends on the size of the elephant, whether it is living in the wild , in a zoo or circus. what it ate and how much it ate. There are too many variables to calculate how much an elephant poops in a day. Basicly, An adult African elephant can produce up to 300 pounds of dung each day

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

As much wood as a woodchuck would, if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
The answer to this age old question has perplexed people for years.
Part of the reason the question is so difficult to answer is that the amount of wood that woodchucks would chuck on a given day varies greatly with the seasons and with the metabolisms of any individual woodchuck.

Woodchuck could chuck as much wood as he wanted! By the way what is a wood chuck? Is it like a gopher? This is difficult to question answer. The amount of wood that woodchucks would chuck on a given day varies greatly with the individual woodchuck. According to a Wall Street Journal article, New York State wildlife expert Richard Thomas found that a woodchuck could chuck around 35 cubic feet of dirt in the course of digging a burrow. Thomas reasoned that if a woodchuck could chuck wood, he would chuck an amount equal to 700 pounds.
Some say it depends on three factors:
The woodchuck’s desire to chuck said wood.
The woodchuck’s need to chuck the aforementioned wood.
The woodchuck’s ability to chuck the wood.

Others say:

He would chuck, he would, as much as he could, if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
If he could chuck wood, the woodchuck would chuck as much as he could!
A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
A woodchuck would chuck all the wood that the woodchuck would chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
If a woodchuck could chuck wood, he would and should chuck wood. But if woodchucks can’t chuck wood, they shouldn’t and wouldn’t chuck wood. Though were I a woodchuck, and I chucked wood, I would chuck wood with the best woodchucks that chucked wood.
If a woodchuck could chuck wood, then s/he’d chuck all the wood, s/he’d chuck and chuck and chuck and chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood.
It would chuck the amount of wood that she sells seashells on the seashore divided by how many pickles Peter Piper picks.
One quarter of a sycamore if you give him a quarter for every quarter of the sycamore he cut.
It might depend on how many female woodchucks were present. Or, it could depend on whether the woodchuck’s mother-in-law was around or not. If she was, he’d be chucking all day. If not, he’d be watching the football game.
Some maintain that woodchucks could not and would not chuck wood at all.
It depends on how good his dentures are!
A woodchuck, would chuck, as much wood, as a woodchuck, could chuck, If a woodchuck could chuck wood. But unfortunately, woodchucks do not chuck wood.
About 5.72 fluid litres of wood
About as many boards as the Mongol hoards would hoard if the Mongol hordes did hoard boards.
Tons. More than you can count. Honestly. No one can chuck more would than a woodchuck.
Due to the average size of a wood chuck and the general density of wood (not including cork) if a wood chuck could chuck wood it would probably get through about 6.573 pounds per day, assuming the wood chuck is functioning correctly.
Using the formula: (W + I) * C where W = the constant of wood, which is well known to be 61, as agreed in many scientific circles. I = the variable in this equation, and stands for the word “if” from the original problem. As there are three circumstances, with 0 equaling the chance that the woodchuck cannot chuck wood, 1 being the theory that the woodchuck can chuck wood but chooses not to, and 2 standing for the probability that the woodchuck can and will chuck wood, we clearly must choose 2 for use in this equation. C = the constant of Chuck Norris, whose presence in any problem involving the word chuck must there, is well known to equal 1.1 of any known being, therefore the final part of this calculation is 1.1. As is clear, this appears to give the answer of (61 + 2) * 1.1 = (63) * 1.1 = 69.3. However, Chuck Norris’ awesome roundhouse kick declares that all decimal points cannot be used in formulas such as this, and so it must be rounded to the final solution of 69 units of wood.
How Chuck Norris got involve: A woodchuck would only chuck as much would as Chuck Norris would allow it to, because the woodchuck shares Chuck’s name. Therefore, Chuck must punish it and make it chuck as much wood as Chuck can. So, a woodchuck would chuck as much wood as Chuck could.
None because a wood chuck cant chuck wood!
Approximately 3.9675 pounds every 5.6843 seconds. So there.
2.865 lbs every 11.3686 Seconds?
About 15 pounds a minute.

How Many Polar Bears are There?

Biologists use a working estimate of about 20,000-25,000 polar bears worldwide.

Population and distribution:
The polar bear is found throughout the Arctic Ocean and adjacent seas. Due to the absence of human development in its remote habitat, it retains more of its original range than any other extant large carnivore. While they are rare north of 88°, there is evidence that they range all the way across the Arctic, and as far south as James Bay in Canada. They can occasionally drift widely with the sea ice, and there have been anecdotal sightings as far south as Berlevåg on the Norwegian mainland and the Kuril Islands in the Sea of Okhotsk. It is difficult to estimate a global population of polar bears as much of the range has been poorly studied, however biologists use a working estimate of about 20,000-25,000 polar bears worldwide.

There are 19 generally recognized discrete subpopulations. The subpopulations display seasonal fidelity to particular areas, but DNA studies show that they are not reproductively isolated. The thirteen North American subpopulations range from the Beaufort Sea south to Hudson Bay and east to Baffin Bay in western Greenland and account for about 70% of the global population. The Eurasian population is broken up into the East Greenland, Barents Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, and Chukchi Sea subpopulations, though there is considerable uncertainty about the structure of these populations due to limited mark and recapture data.

The range includes the territory of five nations: Denmark (Greenland), Norway (Svalbard), Russia, US (Alaska) and Canada. These five nations are the signatories of the 1973 International Agreement for the Conservation of Polar Bears which mandates cooperation on research and conservations efforts throughout the polar bear’s range.

Modern methods of tracking polar bear populations have been implemented only since the mid-1980s, and are expensive to perform consistently over a large area. The most accurate counts require flying a helicopter in the Arctic climate to find polar bears, shooting a tranquilizer dart at the bear to sedate it, and then tagging the bear.] In Nunavut, some Inuit have reported increases in bear sightings around human settlements in recent years, leading to a belief that populations are increasing. Scientists have responded by noting that hungry bears may be congregating around human settlements, leading to the illusion that populations are higher than they actually are. The Polar Bear Specialist Group of the IUCN takes the position that “estimates of subpopulation size or sustainable harvest levels should not be made solely on the basis of traditional ecological knowledge without supporting scientific studies.”
Of the 19 recognized polar bear subpopulations, 5 are declining, 5 are stable, 2 are increasing, and 7 have insufficient data.

The number of known species is continually in flux as new species are found, taxonomic categories adjusted, and redundancies recognized. Compounding the problem is the fact that diversity is not evenly distributed across species, regions, or the planet. Seventy percent of the world’s species occur in only 12 countries: Australia, Brazil, China, Columbia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mexico, Peru, and Zaire.

Current estimates of the total number of species on Earth range from 5 to 30 million, of which, the 2005 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment notes approximately 2 million have been formally described. Determining an accurate count is a challenging job because there is no central registry for species. Often species that have been described by scientists in one part of the world are also recorded and described by scientists in another. It takes time and research to recognize these redundancies, though there are several professional partnerships, such as Species 2000, attempting to create a single nomenclature and taxonomic registry.

Some species, such as many large mammal, butterfly, bird, plant, and insect species, have been well studied. Over half of all described species are insects, including nearly 300,000 known beetles. However, the estimated number of insects on Earth is thought to be close to 8 million and, proportionally, scientists are closer to naming all plant and vertebrate species. Little continues to be known about the distribution and biology of vast numbers of species groups, including arthropods, fungi, and nematodes.

With technological advances, scientists have also discovered a wealth of new species in areas assumed to be barren, previously inaccessible to humans. Researchers have only recently discovered that the deep Antarctic seas are teeming with life. New species are also still being discovered in relatively well populated areas; one study found 10,000 bacterial species in a single gram of Minnesota soil.
