Determining the number of languages spoken in Africa can be complex mostly because it can be difficult to determine whether two languages are distinct or simply dialects of the same language. Still many agree that the number lies around 2,000. Some of the more common languages spoken in Africa include Hausa, Swahili, and Yoruba. Others, including Dahalo, Laal, and Shabo, are less common and only spoken by a few hundred people. While many of the African languages are quite unrelated to one another, the majority of the languages spoken in Africa fall into one of four language families: Afro-Asiatic, Khoisan, Niger-Congo, and Nilo-Saharan.
The Afro-Asiatic language family generally covers the languages spoken in North Africa, East Africa, and Southwest Africa. Nearly 400 languages spoken by over 250 million people are represented by this language family which is largely comprised of Semetic languages. Some Afro-Asiatic languages are Aramaic, Amharic, Arabic, Hausa, Hebrew, and Tigrinya. Also included in the Afro-Asiatic family are the now extinct lanuages of Akkadian and Ancient Egyptian — two languages considered to be the oldest in the world.
The Khoisan (or Khoesaan) languages are generally spoken in the southwestern part of Africa, namely Angola, Botswana, and Namibia. What is probably most unique about the 50 or so Khoisan languages is that they are tonal and use clicking sounds. The largest Khoisan language is Nama which is spoken in Namibia. Other Khoisan languages include Haillom (Namibia) and Sandawe (Tanzania). The Khoisan languages as a whole are generally thought to be dying out.
The Niger-Congo language family is comprised of the greatest number of languages spoken in Africa. This family has over 1500 languages and is spoken by more than 500 million people. In the 1950’s Joseph Greenberg, a linguist and African anthropologist known for his work in language classification and typology, proposed that the Niger-Kordofanian language family join the Niger-Congo language family. Linguists commonly use the Niger-Congo to refer to the entire family, including Kordofanian as a sub-family. Some of the most common languages spoken in Africa that fall within this family include Igbo (Nigeria), Swahili (Tanzania), Yoruba (Nigeria), and Zulu (South Africa).
Approximately 200 languages fall into the Nilo-Saharan language family, and well over 10 million Africans speak a language within this family. Nilo-Saharan languages are mainly confined to the center of Africa and is represented by over 15 nations including Burkina Faso, Egypt, Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Some of the major Nilo-Saharan languages include Dinka (Sudan), Kanuri (Nigeria), and Luo or Dholuo (Kenya).
These languages spoken in Africa are considered to be official languages of the African Union (AU). Still, many of them are dying out to more widely used languages such as Arabic and Swahili. Recently, however, African countries are becoming more conscious about the value of their linguistic inheritance.

How Many Muslims Are There?

Number of Muslims in the world:
Estimates of the total number of Muslims in the world vary greatly:
0.700 billion or more, Barnes & Noble Encyclopedia 1993
0.817 billion, The Universal Almanac (1996)
0.951 billion, The Cambridge Factfinder (1993)
1.100 billion, The World Almanac (1997)
1.200 billion, CAIR (Council on American-Islamic relations)

At a level of 1.2 billion, they represent about 22% of the world’s population. They are the second largest religion in the world. Only Christianity is larger, with 33% of the world’s inhabitants.

Islam is growing about 2.9% per year. This is faster than the total world population which increases about 2.3% annually. It is thus attracting a progressively larger percentage of the world’s population.

Ethnic origins of Muslims in the U.S.:
According to the “Faith Communities Today” report, the ethnic origins of regular participants in U.S. mosques are as follows: South Asian (Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Afghani) = 33 %
African-America = 30 %
Arab = 25 %
Sub-Saharan African = 3.4 %
European (Bosnian, Tartar, Kosovar, etc.) = 2.1 %
White American = 1.6 %
Southeast Asian ( Malaysian, Indonesian, Filipino) = 1.3 %
Caribbean = 1.2 %
Turkish = 1.1 %
Iranian = 0.7 %
Hispanic/Latino = 0.6 %

Muslims in Canada:
Unlike the U.S. which does not tabulate individuals’ religion, the Canadian census asks people what their religion is. Statistics Canada reports that 253,260 Canadians identified themselves as Muslims (0.9% of the total population) during the 1991 census. Those figures are believed to be an under-estimate, because some Muslims would be reluctant to reveal their religion out of fear.

How much till christmas? How many days are till christmas?

When celebrating on December 25, time left till Xmas:
This is a variable number. It is celebrated on December 25, but this date is not known to be Jesus’ actual birthday, and may have initially been chosen to correspond with either the day exactly nine months after some early Christians believed Jesus had been conceived, a historical Roman festival, or the date of the northern hemisphere’s winter solstice. Christmas is central to the Christmas and holiday season, and in Christianity marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days.

At its core, Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus. The holiday’s connection to Christ is obvious through its Old English root of “Cristes maesse” or Christ’s Mass. For Christians, it is the time to renew one’s faith, give generously and consider the past. But Christmas is also a secular celebration of family–one that many non-practicing Christians and people of other religions are comfortable accepting as their own. The secular nature of Christmas was officially acknowledged in 1870 when the United States Congress made it a federal holiday. Federal and state employees and most private businesses observe Dec. 25 by not working.

Christmas is also a fascinating miscellany of traditions: one that combines pre-Christian pagan rituals with modern traditions. Every family that celebrates Christmas has its own customs–some surprisingly universal, others entirely unique–but all comfortably familiar in their seeming antiquity.

Regardless of where the Christmas tradition originated it is part of a very special time of year where people are more considerate of others, more charitable, and where they look for the good in people, rather than the less positive attributes. This feeling of goodwill and peace is one reason that the Christmas season is so special around the world. One of the many wonderful aspects of the Christmas season is the opportunity to be generous and considerate to others.

Christmas has always been a time of bringing families together. A family get-together around Christmas is a wonderful way to spend quality time with your loved ones and reminisce about the past. It is the perfect time of year to celebrate the holiday season, family, love and togetherness. Many families plan reunions or even contact extended family members and invite them to Christmas dinners and events. There are even those that use the internet and other communication devices to reach out to family all across the world on this special holiday. Taking the time and making extra effort to contact family and friends helps to make this a memorable holiday season.

Since Christmas is a holiday that is very treasured and special to most families, it is important to make it memorable and fun. Some of the most memorable things about the Christmas holidays and the season are the wonderful foods that are prepared every year. We tend to overeat but who can resist the tantalizing aroma of food and deserts that fill the home. Top that with a roaring fireplace and a hot cup of cider or chocolate and its naptime.

There are seventy-three books in the Catholic Bible; fourty-seven in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New Testament. Until the Protestant Reformation the ‘Catholic’ Bible was the only edition since, obviously, there was no other major denomination till then. The Protestant Bible is based on the Council of Jamnia (90 AD), whereas the Catholic Bible is based largely on the Septuagint (132 BC). The Seven books that were dropped in the Council of Jamnia (90 AD) were: Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, 1 & 2 Maccabees, Esther 10:4-16-16:24 and Daniel 3:24-90 and 13:1-14:42. Until the Protestant Reformation, these books were in the recognised canons as approved by the Catholic Church. After the Reformation, the Council of Trent (1545-1563 AD) reaffirmed the Canon as approved by Pope Damasus and the Synod of Rome (382), the local Councils of Hippo (393) and Carthage (397), and the Canon contained in the Latin Vulgate translation (420) as the Holy Bible.
