Tectonic plates are great slabs of rock which form the Earth’s crust. Both the continents and the oceans rest on tectonic plates, which float on the superheated, plastic mantle below. Over millions of years, these tectonic plates float around, driven by convection currents in the mantle, gathering into supercontinents and scattering again. This is called the theory of plate tectonics. Tectonic plates move about as fast as your fingernails grow — 5 to 10 centimeters per year.

The Earth has 14 major tectonic plates, and 38 minor plates, for 52 plates total. The major plates are the African Plate, Antarctic Plate, Arabian Plate, Australian Plate, Caribbean Plate, Cocos Plate, Eurasian Plate, Indian Plate, Juan de Fuca Plate, Nazca Plate, North American Plate, Pacific Plate, Philippine Plate, Scotia Plate, South American Plate. The largest are the Antarctic Plate, the Eurasian Plate, and the North American Plate. A continent may include several different plates: for instance, India and Arabia are both separate from the Eurasian Plate. The Himayala Mountains are a result of the Indian Plate pushing north into the Eurasian Plate.

Minor plates break off major plates during rifting events. Some minor plates subduct under other plates as they move. This causes them to be pushed down into the mantle and melt. The Farallon Plate to the west of San Francisco is almost completely subducted beneath the North American Plate, for example. Sometimes a part of a plate will end up on top of another plate, in which case it will be called an accreted terrane. Parts of North America and Europe are terranes.

It is thought that the boundaries of tectonic plates are partially determined by upwelling events called mantle plumes. These split apart the crust and cause it to crack, creating rifts, like the Red Sea, which separates Africa from Arabia. A typical upwelling event creates three rifts at roughly 120° from each other. This is called a triple junction. Usually, two of these rifts will continue to spread while one fails. A failed rift on land is called a rift valley.

Mexico has 31 states and one Federal District, Mexico City, where the seat of the Federal Government and approximately one fifth of the population can be found. Mexico is considered a Federal Republic, with each state from Baja in the North to Oaxaca in the South having a separate state government answerable to the national government. Mexico covers a wide variety of terrain, from desert like plains to mountainous rain forest, and the varied states encompass a wide range of ethnic and social groups.
The region of North America now known as Mexico has been inhabited by humans for over four thousand years. In the 15th century and the Age of Exploration, the West became acquainted with the region and colonized it in an attempt to control its vast natural resources, which included minerals, timber, and a variety of botanical discoveries such as tomatoes and corn. The conquest by the West had tragic consequences for the native peoples of North America, who found themselves subsumed by a highly stratified and deeply Catholic culture.
Early in the 1800s, Mexico fought for independence and won, inspired by the efforts of other former colonies. The first century of independence, however, was marked by revolution and state infighting, with various factions waging for control of Mexico, culminating in 1917 with the drafting of the Constitution. Much like the United States, Mexico divides the governance of the country into executive, judicial, and legislative branches in a system of checks and balances.
The states of Mexico are divided into municipalities, which are governed by mayors. Mexican states also have legislatures, constitutions, and governors, and function in some sense as independent entities able to enact and enforce their own laws. This model of government is familiar to American citizens, who are acquainted with a system of decentralized states as well as a Federal seat of government.
Mexico has several major active political parties, including the Institutional Revolutionary Party, National Action Party, Party of the Democratic Revolution, Green Ecological Party, and Labor Party. The Institutional Revolutionary Party controlled Mexico for 71 years until 2000, when Vicente Fox of the National Action Party was elected President for a non-renewable term of six years.
In the late part of the 20th century, Mexico underwent many governmental reforms, including a restriction of the powers of the President, which had traditionally been the most powerful branch of government. Mexico has also instituted laws and procedures to fight corruption at all levels of the government, as well as to promote a healthy and sustainable economy. Most of the laws have been put in place at the Federal level, governing all the states, while some Mexican states have enacted more radical legislature aimed at putting a stop to corruption in government and economic exploitation by the West.

Satellites are tracked by United States Space Surveillance Network (SSN), which has been tracking every object in orbit over 10 cm (3.937 inches) in diameter since it was founded in 1957. There are approximately 3,000 satellites operating in Earth orbit, according to the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), out of roughly 8,000 man-made objects in total. In its entire history, the SSN has tracked more than 24,500 space objects orbiting Earth. The majority of these have fallen into unstable orbits and incinerated during reentry. The SSN also keeps track which piece of space junk belongs to which country.
The SSN was founded in the wake of the launch of Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, by the Soviet Union in October 1957. Orbiting the planet at 20,000 mph (32,186.88 kph) while emitting a constant radio signal, Sputnik was a red flag that told America not to take its technological dominance for granted. In the following decade, the Space Race between the USSR and USA occurred, ending with Apollo landing in July 1969.
As space technology matured, satellites were launched for military and commercial purposes. The price of satellite launches has dropped to as low as a few million dollars for light satellites, and a few tens of millions for heavy satellites. This put satellite technology within the reach of many nations and international companies.
Satellites have an operating lifespan between five and 20 years. As of 2008, the former Soviet Union and Russia had nearly 1,400 satellites in orbit, the USA about 1,000, Japan more than 100, China about 80, France over 40, India more than 30, Germany almost 30, the UK and Canada 25, and at least ten each from Italy, Australia, Indonesia, Brazil, Sweden, Luxembourg, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea. The company Sea Launch — a consortium of four companies from the United States, Russia, Ukraine and Norway — has launched a few satellites into orbit from international waters every year, although the company filed for bankruptcy in 2009.
The largest man-made satellite currently in orbit around the Earth is the International Space Station. Some satellites, called microsats, nanosats, or picosats, can be as small as 10 cm (3.937 inches) in diameter and 0.1 kg (0.22 pounds) in mass

Estimates range from about 50-70 million killed in World War 2. The Wikipedia article “World War II Casualties” favours the relatively high figure of 72 million. Of these, 61 million were on the Allied side and 11 million were on the Axis side. The article gives a figure of 23 million dead for the Soviet Union and 20 million for China. These figures of course include civilian dead. (Note that the figure for China was recently revised sharply upwards from earlier estimates of about 11 million).
For Germany the overall total is given as just under 7.4 million.
When scholarly sources differ on the number of deaths in a country, a range of war losses is given, in order to inform readers that the death toll is uncertain or disputed. One also needs to know whether the statistics, especially for civilian dead, include deaths from war-related famine and disease.

For people paid every two weeks, there are 26 pay periods in a year. Two weeks makes 10 business days, for a total of 260 working days, not accounting for vacation time that you take.
In the US people commonly say there are 260 weekdays/work days in a year or 2080 work hours in a year based on 52 weeks per year.
(260 = 5wkdys/wk*52wks)
(2080=40hrs/wk*52wks/yr)

However that varies by year.
2008 has 262 weekdays and 366 total days
2009 has 261 weekdays and 365 total days
2010 has 261 weekdays and 365 total days
2011 has 260 weekdays and 365 total days
2012 has 261 weekdays and 366 total days
etc… (hopefully 2012 world ending theories are untrue)

However, few people work every single weekday so the “work day” count is skewed when you take into account Holidays that happen to fall on weekdays (up to 6 major US ones per year) , Vacation Time, and Sick Time.

note: Federal and State employees typically have 10 holidays per year with an 11th one occurring every 4th year (for the Presidential Inauguration) regardless of whether they fall on weekends or not. If their holiday falls on a Saturday then it is recognized on Friday and if it falls on Sunday then it is recognized the next Monday.

Weekdays per year 260-262.
Weekdays minus holidays falling on weekdays 255-258.

Years with only 260 weekdays:
1905 1910 1911 1916 1921 1922 1927 1933 1938 1939 1944 1949 1950 1955 1961 1966 1967 1972 1977 1978 1983 1989 1994 1995 2000 2005 2006 2011 2017 2022 2023 2028 2033 2034 2039 2045 2050 2051 2056 2061 2062 2067 2073 2078 2079 2084 2089 2090 2095

Years with 262 weekdays:
1908 1912 1920 1924 1936 1940 1948 1952 1964 1968 1976 1980 1992 1996 2004 2008 2020 2024 2032 2036 2048 2052 2060 2064 2076 2080 2088 2092

Years with only 255 weekdays minus holidays falling on weekdays (AWESOME!)

Statistics say that 50% of marriages end in divorce. Realize though that these rates include people who divorce only once and those who divorce multiple times. 50% of people never divorce.
Integra, you are correct. The majority of divorces are instigated by women. Men are more likely to cheat than women and roughly 70% of men admit to cheating on their wives at least once, while only 15% of married women admit to cheating on their husbands. Infidelity is BY FAR the main reason stated for divorce.
You also can’t ignore abuse. Many women divorce to protect their children from an abusive, drunk or drugged husband. That is why my great-aunt divorced. My great-uncle started drinking and beating my cousin (who was 8).
Addiction is now the 2nd most common cause of divorce – this includes drugs, alcohol, gaming, gambling and internet addiction. If you include mental illness, which is often a core at the addiction, this reason is far more significant than anything other than infidelity.
The argument that people divorce because of money is just not true. It is usually a sideline reason – the real cause is usually infidelity or addiction.

Scholars have only a rough idea about how many Jews there are in the world today. Current sources report between 13,500,000 and 15,500,000, a variance of about 15%, as defined within very limited boundaries. The real number is probably much higher. Both locating Jews and convincing them to reveal their religious identity complicates and compromises our ability to estimate the number of Jews. These factors result in undercounting Jews around the world. If we consider all the issues that plague counting the Jewish populations around the world, we are probably missing millions of Jews in our official counts.
he snapshot of the worldwide geographic distribution of Jews today is dramatically different from what it was prior to World War II. Before the Holocaust, Europe was the center of the world‘s Jewish population, with relatively large populations also spread throughout North America, North Africa, and the Middle East. In spite of discrimination and harassment in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the world Jewish population showed a steady growth from 2.5 million in 1800 to 11 million in 1900. This growth continued from 1900 to 1938. Prior to the Holocaust that 11 million grew to 16.6 million. The majority of Jews continued to live in Europe with 9.5 million in 1938. North and South America had 5.5 million Jews. The number of Jews in Asia grew from 500,000 to one million between 1900 and 1938.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N., there are 1.02 billion people in the world today who do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life.
Hunger in the world of the 21st century means the same thing it has always meant: not getting enough food to be healthy and lead an active life.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations – there are 1.02 billion people in the world today who fit that description. In contrast, in the year 2010, the global population is nearly 7 billion.
Hunger expert Pedro Sanchez of Columbia University’s Earth Institute pointed out that means that nearly one in 7 people on Earth don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
Most of the world’s hungry people live in developing nations. In absolute terms, Asia and the Pacific have the largest numbers of hungry people. In terms of percentages, Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest prevalence of hungry, with more than one in three people being undernourished, according to the FAO.
The FAO says that the world currently produces enough food for everybody. Overall, around the world in recent decades, a green revolution has taken place. It has allowed Earth’s food supply to keep pace with our world’s growing population, for the most part. So why are there still hungry people? According to the FAO, lack of access to food is the problem. High domestic food prices, lower incomes and, in 2010, increasing unemployment due to the global economic situation means many people cannot afford to buy the food they need.
Hunger experts use the terms “food secure” or “food insecure” to speak of hungry people, and nations with many who are hungry. These experts agree that poverty is a root cause of food insecurity. Food insecure nations tends to have large numbers of very poor people. Natural disasters, war and other conflicts, poor agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of the environment also play a role.

Meanwhile, a food secure country can produce, store or import the food it needs and distribute it equitably. The FAO lists four key factors for achieving food security in a given country:

1. There must be enough food to ensure that each person’s daily energy and nutrient needs can be met.
2. Even in a country with adequate food supplies, people must have access to that food.
3. The food supply must be stable. Factors causing instability of food supplies include droughts, floods, sharp price increases or seasonal unemployment.
4. Cultural acceptability – use of certain foods, food combinations or handling methods can be preempted by religious or cultural taboos.
