How many time zones does Earth have?
There are currently 40 world time zones. There are 24 standard time zones plus 16 areas of the world that use time zones divided into 15-30-45 minute increments. Some larger countries cross several timezones:
- China (about the size of the United States) uses the same time throughout the country even though it crosses 5 standard time zones.
The United States crosses 9 timezones, 10 if those for the Antarctic bases are included; those bases run on New Zealand standard time. The continental US crosses 4 timezones.
Both Russia and France have 11 zones; France does so by having overseas territories. The United Kingdom has 8 for the same reason.
Canada has 6 official timezones.
Australia has 9 timezones (one of them the unofficial UTC+8:45 in Western Australia), with 3 on the mainland and four in various territories, plus one for an Antarctic base
